Pictured above, one of the
pieces created for the recent "Decada" exhibition held at the prestigious
Mura Clay Gallery in Sydney, Australia.
The piece depicts an image of
Chariman Mao embedded in that famous aussie icon the "Life Saver"
. The origianal 3D model was created by 3D scanning the image of Chairman
Mao from a medalion and drawing a 3D model of the Life Saver.
Both images were combined then run through Artcam for the toolpath generation
stage. Plaster molds are created from the machined pattern then clay pressings
are created.

Similar to the Life saver work the
mould for this piece was created from a flat bed scanned picture (BMP),
the 3D
model is created in Artcam by
setting a width, height and depth.

This mold was created by electonically
digitising a coin, the coin is placed in the 3D scanner and an ultrasonic
stylus passes over the coin at a certain pitch (spacing) recording the
surface. The surface is modified and manupulated using
solids or knurbs modeling software
then passed through Artcam for the toolpath creation and verification stage.
